It was a pompous meeting. Everyone in the room seemingly seemed to be interested in each other, while they sipped on their alcohol and smiled. A question would be asked to each other; 'how are you doing?' The response inevitably and always was ; 'oh good, I cannot complain' only to hear further details about how their job is doing and how much money they are making. But behind the smiles, and behind the front of every individual, I could tell that these people were hurting. The only reason why they were really there was not to connect with people, but rather it was to promote themselves and make connections. The motivation was purely money. Of course they would not ever admit that, because that would reveal their real motive. And I am sure their may have been a few that that were actually interested in each others family and what not buy maybe only to keep them talking because of how attracted they may have been to each other despite that both were either divorced or currently married.
And in the middle of the conversation, they would stop, and say 'oh, I have to get a drink'- yet another reason why they came.
People are hurting inside despite what they tell you. When they say they are good they are not telling you the condition of their soul or their problems at home. They wouldn't want you or I to hear about that because that in itself may mean that they are rejected. The world rejects those who have problems, the world rejects those who have extra baggage. Jesus never rejected anyone. He was there at the well with the Samaritan who had many men, not husbands. But He reached out and listened to the woman and then healed her and sent her on her way of living. Let us stop trying to hide behind a mask, and be open. Only then will we see and realize who our real friends are, and only then we ourselves will be able to touch someone and tell them about Jesus.
